Szczytno brings together city history, a marked hiking trail and a landscape of lakes; Lake Domowe Małe is close to the centre. Domowe Małe covers 11.4 ha; in Szczytno, the Mazursko–Kurpiowski hiking trail crosses a bridge over the channel between Domowe Duże and Domowe Małe. Castle and museum: history from different perspectives
Since 5 July 2019, the Muzeum Mazurskie has had a permanent exhibition on the history of Szczytno and its surroundings. It spans the period from prehistory to the present day. If you would like to get to know the area through more than individual buildings, the exhibition offers a way to explore its history and the surrounding region in one place.
The ruins of the Teutonic Castle also offer a distinctive way to explore their history: visitors can operate multimedia devices themselves and access information tailored to their interests. The experience is also adapted to the habits and perceptions of young people. This adds a self-guided option to the castle visit, allowing visitors to choose the information they want to explore.
Two floors in the castle’s north wing are designated for exhibition openings and permanent or temporary exhibitions on history and contemporary local art. The rooms are designed for year-round use. Both long-term and changing exhibitions are therefore part of the plan. Szczytno’s tourist information office is located in the castle’s exhibition hall, which is also intended for year-round use.
On foot between lakes and a historic house
The yellow-marked Mazursko–Kurpiowski hiking trail begins at the Muzeum Mazurskie, by the ruins of the Teutonic Castle. In Szczytno, it crosses a bridge over the channel between Domowe Duże and Domowe Małe. The route connects a specific stretch between the lakes with the historic townscape around the castle and museum.
At the endpoint of the trail, on Konopnicka Street, stands the historic Chata Mazurska. The house dates from the mid-19th century. This gives the route a historic destination as well as the bridge and lakes. It offers you a different way to experience Szczytno than visiting the exhibition rooms: the route brings the town’s history to life along the way and at a historic building.
City life and an annual festival
In the centre of Szczytno is a park named after musician Krzysztof Klenczon. It features a monument to Klenczon and a fountain. The park adds a place commemorating a musician to the town’s historical attractions; its central location also makes it an easy landmark to spot in the cityscape.
Festiwal Dni i Noce Szczytna is an annual town festival. If you would like to combine your trip with the event, check the dates for the relevant year. That way, you can include the festival as a potential highlight in your plans without making your entire trip revolve around a particular event.
