Malszewo (Małszewo) lies on the shore of Lake Jezioro Małszewskie. Several aspects may be of interest when planning your trip: its position directly on the lakeshore, historic village architecture, an 11-kilometre circular route and a longer cycling connection from Olsztyn. Nearby, you will also find Zamkowa Góra, a historic site associated with a local legend. Lakeside setting and community activities
Lake Jezioro Małszewskie is closely connected to the village: Malszewo lies directly on its shore. The Jedwabno municipality also counts it among its attractive and interesting lakes. A picnic was held on the village beach on 27 August 2024, featuring ball games, badminton, walks, water games and exercises on an outdoor fitness circuit.
Historic architecture in the village
A historic inn with a tavern is listed in the national register of monuments; as of 30 September 2023, the register dates it to the 18th or 19th century. The wooden tavern consists of two adjoining buildings: a tavern and a stable. Its date is given alternatively as 1813 or the late 18th century.
The watermill dates from the second half of the 19th century and stands beside a stream. This means you will encounter two distinct historic building types in the village: a divided wooden tavern and a mill beside a watercourse. Numerous houses in the village are protected, including houses numbered 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8 and 9. Several wooden houses, including numbers 7 and 8, add to this collection. Architectural interest thus extends beyond the inn and mill to the village homes.
Cycling routes of different lengths
For trip planning, you can compare two cycling routes of different lengths. The Jedwabno–Lipniki–Małszewo–Burdąg–Jedwabno circular route is 11 km long, marked in red and passes through Małszewo. Its length and varied surfaces make it somewhat challenging. The second red route is 25.5 km long and runs from Olsztyn via Szczęsne, Klewki, Kaborno, Nowa Wieś, Kopanki and Łajs to Małszewo. The route from Olsztyn is therefore more than twice as long as the 11 km loop. On the circular route, Małszewo is an intermediate point on the way back to Jedwabno; the longer route from Olsztyn, by contrast, ends in Małszewo. The routes therefore differ not only in distance, but also in their starting points and destinations. Check the red markings for the 25.5 km route locally.
Zamkowa Góra and a local legend
Near Malszewo, Zamkowa Góra lies along the forest road to Dłużek. The hill is also known as Schlossberg, Duża Góra or Zaklęta Góra. A Prussian hillfort once stood there. According to local tradition, a castle sank during a siege, along with the castle lord’s daughter. The hillfort is a historical trace, while the story of the sinking and the lord’s daughter is a legend.
