Discover Łomżyński: Hillforts, Forests and Nature
Accommodation in Łomżyński
In Łomżyński, archaeological traces and memorial sites meet forests, protected areas and the Narew landscape. As a result, excursions can have very different focuses: you can explore early fortifications and cultural heritage, or include nature trails and birdwatching in your plans.
Hillforts and Settlement Traces
At Góra Królowej Bony, clear traces of a large hillfort and the earthen ramparts surrounding it are visible. Nearby is Wzgórze Św. Wawrzyńca. There you will find a hillfort dating from around the 9th to 10th century, as well as settlement remains and the remains of a church. The neighboring hills offer various archaeological points of interest: alongside the fortification traces, Wzgórze Św. Wawrzyńca also draws attention to the remains of the settlement and church.
In Puchały, six immovable cultural heritage sites are entered in the register of monuments: a churchyard, a Roman Catholic cemetery, a brick cemetery chapel dating from the beginning of the 20th century, a wooden cemetery chapel from the middle of the 19th century, and two avenues. These include the Puchały–Milewo lime-tree avenue and the Puchały–Milewo horse-chestnut and lime-tree avenue. If the current legal status is important for your plans, check the register separately.
A Memorial Site in the Forest
A monument to Stach Konwa stands in a forest clearing in Jednaczewski Forest, on the edge of the Rycerski Kierz Nature Reserve. It was erected in 1922 at the presumed site of his burial.
Since 2022, the Łomża Municipality has organized patriotic commemorations in the clearing around the name day of Stach, or Stanisław, on May 8. They are accompanied by the family event “Kurpiowska Majówka u Stacha,” featuring historical and educational elements. If you plan to attend a commemoration, check the latest dates in advance.
The Narew Landscape and Nature Observation
The Wielki Dział Nature Reserve in the vicinity of Pniewo is part of the largest natural riparian forest complex in the Narew Valley. It serves as a permanent refuge for cranes, black storks, lesser spotted eagles, white-tailed eagles, moose, wolves and deer. Which animals you actually see can vary in nature; the species list describes the habitat, not guaranteed sightings.
The Łomża Municipality has tourist trails through protected areas, including the Łomżyński Park Krajobrazowy Doliny Narwi. They offer direct contact with nature. As route information can change, it is worth checking the specific trail before setting out. From the viewpoint in Siemień Nadrzeczny, you can observe the many birds that live in the landscape park. Their presence is seasonal and variable, so plan your observations flexibly.
Nature Experiences and Choosing a Base
According to the Łomża Municipality website, updated in February 2024, agritourism properties in the municipality are located in or near the Łomżyński Park Krajobrazowy Doliny Narwi. The landscape and proximity to rivers and forests invite you to enjoy nature and go on walking and cycling trips. Individual properties and offers may change; check the current options before booking.
As of the information available in February 2024, agritourism providers in the Łomża Municipality also organized excursions to the Kurpiowski Open-Air Museum in Nowogród, the Natural History Museum in Drozdowo, and Biebrza Landscape Park. As providers and excursion arrangements may change, check the specific arrangements directly in advance.
Then compare the locations of the available accommodations with your specific places to visit and check availability for your travel dates.
