The Basilica and Historic Buildings in Nysa

The Basilica of St James the Apostle and St Agnes is one of the standout destinations for a cultural stay. In 2011, it was added to Poland’s list of Historic Monuments. The parish offers audio guides to visitors through its parish office. The building also has a bell tower with an observation platform, offering views across the city, the lake and the nearby mountains. Smaller details are also worth a closer look. The Piękna Studnia has a Baroque wrought-iron grille created by Wilhelm Helleweg. The Fontanna Trytona was carved from Sławniowice marble in 1700–1701. The Wieża Wrocławska is another part of the city’s history: the Gothic gate tower is 33 metres high and was integrated into Nysa’s 14th-century city fortifications. The Bastion Św. Jadwigi has been fully restored and is now a tourist attraction and a venue for cultural events.

Explore Historic Routes on Foot

The Miejski Szlak Turystyczny passes Nysa’s main historic sights and fortifications. The circular route is 13 kilometres long. If you would like to follow the route, you can get guidebooks, maps and a tourist pass from the tourist information point in Nysa. This lets you make the historic loop a focus of your stay, rather than choosing individual sights without an overarching route.

There is also the Szlak Forteczny, where you can explore the preserved fortifications on foot. The route leads to Fort II. The city trail and the fortress trail offer different highlights: the Miejski Szlak Turystyczny connects historic sights and fortifications in a 13-kilometre loop, while Fort II is the endpoint of the Szlak Forteczny. No additional walking or travel time can be inferred from these route details.

A Loop around Jezioro Nyskie

If you would like to include a longer lakeside route as well as the city, Jezioro Nyskie offers a circular route of around 30–35 kilometres. It follows the shores of Jezioro Nyskie and the EuroVelo 9 route, then returns to Nysa via the Szlak Kopernikowski. This loop is quite different from the shorter city walking routes and may be a factor when choosing a stay that suits your plans.

One section along the dam is around 5 kilometres long and paved. In favourable weather, it offers views of the Sudetes. This approximate length refers to the dam section, not the entire loop. It gives you a specific point of reference if you want to compare a shorter part of the lakeside route with a longer circuit.

Museum, Local Cuisine and Cultural Programme

The Muzeum Powiatowe w Nysie is housed in the historic former palace of the Bishops of Wrocław. Its permanent exhibition presents the history of Nysa and the wider region. The building’s historic character and the regional focus of the exhibition complement your exploration of the architecture and fortifications with insight into the city’s and region’s history.

For culinary activities, the Centrum Produktu Lokalnego offers workshops on cooking, baking cakes, decorating gingerbread and making chocolate. It is located in central Nysa, next to the Fontanna Trytona. The Nyski Dom Kultury organises concerts, theatre performances, art workshops, festivals and events for residents and tourists. These activities give your stay a different focus from the historic routes; you can check specific event dates for your planned travel period.

Nysa also lies on the Nyska Droga św. Jakuba. During the Dni Twierdzy Nysa, a historical battle reenactment takes place at Fort II on the Saturday of the last weekend in July. If your stay falls on that weekend, you can consider this event as a special reason to visit the fort.
