City History and Church Architecture

The town hall tells the story of several phases of construction: it was built in 1570 on the site of a 14th-century merchant’s house, using parts of the earlier building. The town hall was destroyed during the Second World War and rebuilt in 2006–2008. The building therefore reflects both the long history of the town and its later reconstruction.

The Parish Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Głubczyce dates from the second half of the 13th century. Its organ came from the Gebrüder Rieger workshop in 1907 and has more than 60 stops. A different building history is represented by the Franciscan church and monastery complex: it was built between 1753 and 1770 to a design by Jan Innocenty Töpper of Prudnik. The complex includes a Baroque church and a distinctive four-winged monastery arranged around a quadrangle with an inner courtyard.

Historic Places Nearby

Other places also bear different traces of architectural history. The Church of the Holy Trinity in Opawica was built between 1701 and 1706 and is a Class “O” monument. The Church of St John the Baptist in Chomiąża dates from 1575. In Grobniki, the history of the castle goes back to the 16th century; it was remodelled in the 19th century. The Chapel of St Barbara there dates from 1701.

Next to the chapel is a spring well which, according to local tradition, has been credited with miraculous powers since the 17th century. Until the end of the Second World War, it was one of the larger pilgrimage sites in Silesia. The tradition and long history of the pilgrimage site give Grobniki a distinct religious dimension in addition to its buildings.

Landscape and Getting Around

The protected Mokre–Lewice landscape area covers 6,527 ha and includes part of the Opawskie Mountains. Its landscape features include gorges and the valleys of the Troja, Osobłoga and Opawica rivers. Rare and protected plants grow in the area, which also serves as a refuge for protected animals. For those looking to combine nature and culture on their trip, this offers a different focus from exploring historic buildings.

The Głubczyce Forest has considerable therapeutic value and is important for tourism and recreation. A three-row lime-tree avenue, designated a natural monument, connects the municipal forest with Głubczyce. The route of the Opavice Cycle Route is also described in detail: from Lewice, it first follows a local road and then a field track towards Zubrzyce, which belongs to Głubczyce Municipality. Take the change from road to field track into account when planning your own route.
