The castle and park complex lies in the low-lying northwest of Kurozwęki, in the floodplain of the Czarna River. The ensemble includes the palace, the eastern Annex Pavilion, and the western Orangery Pavilion. It also includes the coach houses, with a columned portal guarded by two lions, and a preserved section of the English landscape park. The east-west layout helps distinguish the two pavilions; the columned portal with the lions is a striking detail of the coach houses.
The castle and park complex also includes a restored Baroque palace chapel and a museum with a gallery of paintings by Józef Czapski. The architecture of the complex is thus complemented by both sacred Baroque architecture and an art collection. The palace chapel is a distinct element of the complex; the history of the parish church in Kurozwęki is a separate historical thread.
Church and Art History
The parish of the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and Saint Augustine in Kurozwęki was founded in 1347. From 1487, the church served as a parish church and as a monastery of the Canons Regular of the Lateran. The dates mark two milestones: the founding of the parish in 1347, and the aforementioned church and monastic functions from 1487. This helps clarify the sequence without equating the founding of the parish with the start of these functions.
Bison, Landscape and Maze
On a guided bison safari, visitors travel by vehicle into the bison enclosure. Young bison can be seen every spring in the meadow behind the palace. Browar Popiel opened in Kurozwęki on December 8, 2018. This more recent date adds a later milestone in the town’s history to the parish’s much longer history.
