Zaborowice: History and Three Kings’ Procession

A Royal Village History

The first documented mention of Zaborowice dates from 1364. In 1462, King Casimir IV Jagiellon granted Zaborowice to the royal treasurer for life. This grant was a single event in the village’s history and should be distinguished from its longer-standing status as a royal settlement. The mention in 1364 should therefore be understood as the earliest written record, not automatically as the date the village was founded; the settlement may have originated earlier.

From the 14th century until 1795, Zaborowice was a royal settlement. As a royal village, it paid tithes to the Sandomierz collegiate chapter. Thus, a status spanning an extended period and a specific tax relationship existed side by side. Their timescales differ: the mention and the grant were individual milestones, while the royal designation describes a long period.

The Name’s Meaning and the Three Kings’ Procession

The name Zaborowice is linked to the location “za borem” (“beyond the forest”). This interpretation adds a linguistic perspective to the political history: while the dates place offices and status in context, the name’s explanation points to a connection between the village’s name and its location.

A municipal report from 2023 describes the Three Kings’ Procession, Orszak Trzech Króli, which passed through the streets of Zaborowice to the church of pw. Św. Jana Chrzciciela (St. John the Baptist) in Zaborowicach. Participants sang Christmas carols and carried lanterns; a Nativity play was performed at the church. The reported events thus combined a procession through the village with singing, lanterns, and a performance at the church.

On January 6, after a two-year pandemic-related interruption, the Three Kings’ Procession again passed through Zaborowice to celebrate Epiphany.

Municipal Resources and Bus Routes

Zaborowice has a branch of the Gminna Biblioteka Publiczna. It adds a local municipal resource to the village’s historical and cultural points of reference.
