Discover Kielce: Culture and History

A cultural trip to Kielce can bring together rural architecture, sacred history and literary history. Each place offers a different focus: in Tokarnia, the reconstruction of village settlement patterns takes centre stage, while at the Święty Krzyż Monastery, the focus is on religious life today and the history of the monastic order. The manor house in Oblęgorek, meanwhile, is dedicated to Henryk Sienkiewicz and his work.

Rural Architecture in Tokarnia

The Ethnographic Park in Tokarnia is an open-air museum covering more than 65 hectares and featuring over 80 historic buildings. These include farmhouses, barns, windmills, churches and manor houses. The different types of buildings offer a glimpse into residential, agricultural and religious architecture. The park also aims to reconstruct typical village settlement patterns from four subregions of the Kielecczyzna: the Świętokrzyskie Mountains, the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland, the Sandomierz Upland and the Nida Basin. The focus is therefore not only on individual historic buildings, but also on how typical village layouts differ across these subregions.

Monastery History and a Medieval Fortress

The Święty Krzyż Monastery is an active religious institution. It was formerly home to the Benedictine order; today it is inhabited by Missionaries of the Oblates of the Immaculate Virgin Mary. Both its former history as a monastic order and its present-day religious function are therefore important to understanding the site.

The Royal Castle in Chęciny offers a different historical focus: in the Middle Ages, it was one of the Crown’s most important fortresses. The monastery and the castle thus represent different chapters of history—one a religious institution with changing monastic affiliations, the other a fortress that played an important role in the medieval kingdom. Visitors interested in history can consider these topics separately rather than reducing them to a single era.

Sienkiewicz’s Manor House in Oblęgorek

In 1958, Poland’s first museum dedicated to the life and work of Nobel laureate Henryk Sienkiewicz opened in the manor house in Oblęgorek. His apartment was reconstructed in the historic ground-floor rooms. It includes a study, living room, dining room, smoking room and bedroom. The rooms complement the biographical and literary focus with concrete living spaces: the study, shared rooms and bedroom give the reconstructed apartment different functions. The historic opening date and the rooms of the apartment thus represent two distinct aspects of the museum’s dedication.

Getting Around by City Bus

City bus route 31 is also relevant when planning trips in the wider region. The route runs from Kielce to Jaskinia Raj. From the “Jaskinia Raj” stop, it is about 1,300 metres or a 15–20-minute walk to the cave entrance. In Kielce, route 31 also stops on Żytnia Street in the direction of Chęciny.
