Natural landscapes and birdlife at Ekopark Wschodni

Ekopark Wschodni is a protected ecological area that safeguards unique plant and animal habitats in the brackish marsh ecosystem. It covers 381 hectares. It is listed as a bird protection area in the European network of protected areas, and around 80 bird species have been recorded there. The protected area, marsh habitats and birdwatching each give this natural landscape a distinct character.

Ekopark can be combined with other experiences in Kołobrzeg: the red-marked, internationally significant E-9 hiking trail passes through the city; its section in Kołobrzeg is about 12 kilometres long. This figure refers to the length of the local section and provides a concrete point of reference when planning a hike.

Churches, a museum and medieval defensive walls

The Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Kołobrzeg is a five-nave church built around the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries. Its furnishings include a bronze baptismal font dating from 1355 and a large chandelier from 1523, known as the Schlieffen Crown. The building’s history and individual works of art offer visitors different historical points of reference.

The Muzeum Oręża Polskiego presents the history of the Polish military in chronological order, from the Middle Ages to the present day. More than 70 military vehicles, aircraft, armoured weapons and artillery pieces are on display in the technology hall and an outdoor exhibition. A museum visit thus combines a chronological presentation with extensive exhibits in two exhibition areas.

Another landmark from the city’s history is the Baszta Lontowa, also called Baszta Prochowa. Built in the 15th century, it is a remnant of Kołobrzeg’s medieval defensive walls. The basement of the Kołobrzeg Lighthouse also houses a mineral museum. These places complement the city’s ecclesiastical and military history with surviving defensive architecture and a natural history collection.

Trails and harbour views

The 308-metre-long eastern breakwater lies at the end of Kołobrzeg’s passenger harbour. From there, visitors can enjoy views of the harbour roadstead, passing ships and sunsets. Together with the E-9 trail, these offer different experiences: a route through the city and its approximate length, and views of the harbour and shipping.

The wider Kołobrzeg destination

Beyond the city, the wider Kołobrzeg destination also offers other natural and cultural landscapes. Dźwirzyno Beach is a wide, sandy stretch of coast bordered by dunes and pine forest; it is suited to walking and relaxing in the shade. The Gmina Kołobrzeg also brings together coastal dunes, peat bogs, pine forests, meadows, salt marshes and river valleys. More than 700 recorded vascular plant species, including many protected species, also contribute to the area’s natural diversity.

For active exploration of the wider destination, three Nordic walking routes are described in Grzybowo and Dźwirzyno. They have different levels of difficulty and run along the beaches and through the coastal forest. The 55-kilometre Wokół Jeziora Resko route runs mostly through the Gmina Kołobrzeg and also enters the neighbouring Gmina Trzebiatów.
