Kobylocha on Lake Sasek Wielki: Shorelines, Forest and Waterways

Kobylocha (Polish: Kobyłocha) lies partly on the middle, largest section of Lake Sasek Wielki. The lake is a ribbon lake and lies entirely within a quiet zone. Trelkówko, Linowo and Łysa Góra are also located on this middle section. Kobylocha and Piece lie on the eastern side of the lake in the southern basin. The village’s location can therefore be attributed both to the largest middle section and to the southern basin.

Forest, island and underwater meadows

The southern basin covers 180 hectares and is surrounded by forests on both sides. Near the southwestern shore lies a 0.4-hectare marshy island covered with alder trees. The lakebed also has its own structure: it contains numerous deep spots and submerged plants such as pondweed and hornwort, which form underwater meadows. The landscape of Lake Sasek Wielki thus includes both the wooded sides of the southern basin and the plant growth beneath the water.

If you are interested in the lakeside landscape, the lake offers more than a single view of the shore. The information about the basin, island and lakebed describes different features of the same body of water. Their locations are useful to know: the island lies near the southwestern shore, while Kobylocha and Piece are on the eastern side of the southern basin.

Kayak routes on Lake Sasek Wielki

The 36.5-kilometre kayak route along the Saska and Sawica rivers passes through Lake Sasek Wielki, Jęcznik, Janowo, Sędańsk, Lake Sędańskie, Lake Sasek Mały, Kucbork and Wiebark. Its course therefore covers several lakes and villages. The kayak route on the Sawica begins at the northern end of Lake Sasek Wielki and heads south, passing Kobylocha along the way. The Ośrodek Wypoczynkowy „Łoś“ recreation centre is located near the settlement.

The course of the Saska also helps you find your way around the waterways: at the beginning of the lake, it flows out of the body of water near National Road 53, between Szczytno and Pasym. At the end of the lake is a marshy canal inlet through which you can reach the smallest, northern part of Lake Sasek Wielki. Check the current conditions at this passage before setting out on a kayak trip.

A route description published in 2016 says that the forest to the right of the kayak route, as you pass Kobylocha, is home to a colony of herons and cormorants. Seasonal hunting grey herons can be spotted in the reed beds around this part of the lake. The two accounts emphasise different things: the first describes the forest along the route, while the second refers to possible sightings in the reeds.

Cycling tour and accommodation locations

A cycling tour also passes through Kobylocha: its route goes from Piece via Szczycionek and Kobylocha to Linowo. Alongside the kayak routes, there is therefore a land-based tour on which the village features as a stop between the named settlements. Both route descriptions provide concrete landscape and geographic reference points to help you plan a trip around Lake Sasek Wielki.
