There are two ways to explore Gmina Gietrzwałd: the religious and regional history of Gietrzwałd, and routes that start there or pass through the municipality. Marian heritage and local history

The Marian apparitions of Gietrzwałd hold a special place in local religious tradition. According to the local account, they are the only apparitions in Poland to have been officially confirmed by the Vatican. On 16 September 1877, during the apparitions, a chapel with a figure of the Virgin Mary was erected at the site of the apparitions. This date anchors the story to a specific moment in the events.

A wooden chapel was also built in Gietrzwałd on a hill that slopes gently down towards the river. The chapel was later destroyed. The Marian story is therefore not the only starting point if you are interested in the town’s historical traces.

Regional collections and art

The Izba Muzealna is housed in a building above the Giłwa River, which the residents of Gietrzwałd call “kuźnia.” The Izba Muzealna contains exhibits collected by students at a secondary school for a regional exhibition. The objects on display include old household items; their descriptions are written in both the Warmian dialect and Polish. This gives the objects a regional and linguistic connection. If you plan to visit, check in advance whether a visit is possible.

The Galeria Pełna Cudów at the Centrum Kulturalno-Biblioteczne is also part of the cultural offering: for years, it has promoted regional and folk art by amateur and professional artists. Before visiting, check which exhibitions are currently on display.

Another detail of local history can be found in the deskale created in Gietrzwałd by artist Arkadiusz Andrejkow from Sanok. One deskal depicts Klaus Jach on a bicycle. The photograph it is based on was taken in 1948; according to the local account, the bicycle was the first in Gietrzwałd. The work thus combines a depiction of a specific person with a local story about a bicycle.

An amphitheatre was among the features of an investment project completed in Gietrzwałd in 2014.

Walking paths and cycling routes

The garden by the river is a green promenade on the Gietrzwałd circular route, a walking path designated as part of the project. For orientation, you can distinguish this walk from the cycling routes described here. The Warmińska Droga Krajobrazowa runs from Gietrzwałd to Woryty.

There are three official, marked cycling routes in Gmina Gietrzwałd. The blue route is 19.6 kilometres long, starts and ends in Gietrzwałd, and passes through Woryty, Nowy Młyn, Stękiny, Porbady and Wrzesina. The yellow route also starts in Gietrzwałd, runs through Rentyny and returns to Gietrzwałd. You can distinguish the two circular routes by the sequences of places listed; the blue route’s length is also specified.

Before setting out on a bike ride, it is advisable to check current route conditions. The place names also give you specific reference points for choosing a route: the blue route passes through five named places, while Rentyny is listed as a stop on the yellow route. You can take these described routes into account when planning without conflating the cycling routes with the walking path or the Warmińska Droga Krajobrazowa.
