Pilgrimage Sanctuary and Rosary Chapels
The Święta Lipka pilgrimage sanctuary is designated a Pomnik Historii, or Historic Monument. It is considered an exceptionally high-quality Baroque religious complex and the oldest Marian cult center in northern Poland. The Historic Monument comprises the Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the cloisters surrounding it, and the monastery. On February 24, 1983, Pope John Paul II granted the church the title of minor basilica by decree.
The pilgrimage route from Reszel to Święta Lipka includes the Rosary Chapel complex, with 15 chapels. Their niches contain reliefs depicting the mysteries of the Rosary. The construction also has specific features: the chapels are built of brick and plastered. Most have gabled roofs, while three have hipped roofs. The final section of the pilgrimage route to Święta Lipka follows an unpaved path through the forest.
Museum and Organ
The Świętolipskie Museum is open daily from 10:00 to 17:00 from May to September. It has seven exhibition rooms with six permanent exhibitions, as well as temporary exhibitions. One exhibition is devoted to the history of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Święta Lipka. The museum also displays part of Saint John Paul II’s personal library: about 1,000 books and albums that were brought from Rome to Święta Lipka after his death.
In Święta Lipka, visitors can hear the Baroque organ and see its moving elements every day. The sanctuary publishes set times for organ performances, arranged by day of the week. On Sundays and public holidays, they begin at 10:00, 12:30, 13:30, 15:00, and 16:00. On Saturdays, the times are 10:00, 11:00, 13:00, 14:00, and 15:30; on weekdays, 10:00, 11:00, 14:00, 15:30, and 17:00. Different times apply in some cases to groups of more than 20 people, sometimes by prior arrangement. If the organ is your main interest, you can compare these times with your planned day of visit.
Pilgrimages and Summer Music
Pilgrimages also shape the character of the place. The “Gwiaździsta” star pilgrimage leads to Święta Lipka from Reszel, Kętrzyn, Mrągowo, Giżycko, and nearby parishes. This identifies the place as a destination on various pilgrimage routes, without implying that all participants travel together or follow the same route.
The organizers describe the Świętolipskie Music Evenings as an annual music event. They have been held in the basilica since 1989, during the summer holidays, on Fridays at 20:00. At the same time, the organizers announced preparations for the 39th edition in 2027. The summer-holiday and Friday schedule may help you keep this music event in mind when planning your visit; it does not confirm a specific date in 2027.
