A walk with stops and views of Lake Patelnia
The nature and education trail is a circular route of about 7 km, laid out in two sections. It starts and ends in the centre of Kruklanki. Twelve themed stops with information boards cover the fauna, flora, history and culture of the surrounding area. The trail thus brings together natural and cultural themes, without requiring you to focus on just one.
The walking trail also includes a viewpoint overlooking Lake Patelnia. If you would like to include nature watching and a scenic view in your day’s plans, this gives you a clear point of reference when choosing a route. The trail is circular and about 7 km long. This information can help you plan the walk as a separate activity, without assuming a particular walking time or level of difficulty.
St James’ Way and the kayaking route: two other perspectives
St James’ Way also passes through Kruklanki: the Olecko–Kruklanki–Giżycko section is part of this pilgrimage route. The route runs between Lakes Gołdopiwo and Brożówka and reaches Kruklanki after 1.5 km. From there, it continues via Kożuchy Wielkie to Giżycko. Unlike the circular walking trail, this is a route that continues beyond the village. If you are interested in pilgrimage routes, you can therefore consider Kruklanki a stop along this section.
For a trip on the water, the Sapina River offers a separate point of interest. In the Kruklanki area, the river forms part of a scenic kayaking route about 26 km long. It connects Lake Kruklin to the south with Lake Święcajty to the north. The route’s course and endpoints are therefore clearly defined; the walking trail, St James’ Way and kayaking route offer different ways to experience the surrounding area.
Church, railway bridge and preserved station buildings
The Church of the Assumption of Mary in Kruklanki is part of the village’s history. Built in 1574, it is now a parish church. Kruklanki is also home to buildings from the former railway station. Both places offer a historical perspective on your trip, but in different ways: one is a church with a long history, the other, physical traces of the former railway station.
Near Kruklanki are the ruins of a five-span reinforced-concrete railway bridge over the Sapina River. Built in 1908, it is considered the best-known site in the Kruklanki area. It lies a few hundred metres south of Lake Patelnia. This location information helps you distinguish the bridge ruins from the lake as separate points of reference; it does not imply that they form part of a shared route.
