Kalwaria Pacławska: Sanctuary and Chapels

Kalwaria Pacławska is a Franciscan sanctuary and monastery shaped by pilgrimage routes, chapels and a long religious history. Pilgrims come for liturgy and prayer before the miraculous image of Our Lady of Kalwaria, as well as to follow the devotional paths. Visitors choosing the destination for a trip will find different ways to experience its character: religious tradition, historic buildings and paths through the surrounding landscape.

The Sanctuary and the History of the Site

The history of Kalwaria Pacławska and its monastery dates back to 1660. After returning from a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, Andrzej Maksymilian Fredro decided to recreate in Poland places associated with the Passion of Christ. This idea shaped the site’s religious significance, which can also be experienced through its buildings and pilgrimage routes.

The Calvary chapel complex comprises 41 structures. Most are built of masonry, while others are wooden; there is also a wooden cross and three stone columns. The village’s houses are also part of its architectural character: many timber-frame houses have arcaded porches. Some buildings are in the Boyko style, in which the living and working areas are combined.

Among the chapels, the Pustelnia św. Marii Magdaleny stands out for its simple design: the small wooden chapel has a shingle roof and stands on a hill where a fortified settlement once stood. Remains of the earthworks are still visible there. A wooden chapel of św. Marii Magdaleny dates from 1870. The “Trzy Marie” chapel was built in 1873 and restored after 1945; the wooden “U Prokli” chapel dates from 1863.

Pilgrimage Routes, Nature and Views

The routes reveal different aspects of the religious tradition. The John Paul II Pilgrimage Route leads from Przemyśl to the sanctuary in Kalwaria Pacławska. The Stations of the Cross route begins at the “U Piłata” chapel in Gradusy and leads through the forest, over Calvary, to the Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre. The two route descriptions provide different reference points to help you plan your visit.

About half of the “Kalwaria Pacławska” nature and history trail runs through the “Kalwaria Pacławska” nature reserve. In this section, you must remain on the designated path. The observation tower offers sweeping views to the northeast over the Wiar Valley, surrounding villages, wooded hills and the border landscape. Access is seasonal and supervised; check the current local regulations before your visit.

Museums and Memorabilia

The Kalwaria Museum presents the origins of the site and its history of establishment and development. Dedicated rooms are devoted to Andrzej Maksymilian Fredro, the founder of Kalwaria Pacławska, and Szczepan Józef Dwernicki, who expanded the site. The Museum of Our Lady collects memorabilia related to the miraculous image of Kalwaria. Together with other places open to visitors that present the veneration of Our Lady and the Franciscan missionary presence, the museums offer a fuller picture of the sanctuary.
