Przemyśl: Cultural Heritage, Hiking Trails and Nature
Accommodation in Przemyśl
In Przemyśl County, evidence of religious and military history meets hiking trails and protected landscapes. The county lies in the foothills of the outer Carpathian arc and mostly within the Pogórze Przemyskie mesoregion.
Trails through the Pogórze Przemyskie
Several trails differ in length and in the landscapes they describe. The John Paul II Pilgrim Trail was established in 1991, is 22 km long and leads to Kalwaria Pacławska. The red hiking trail starts in Przemyśl, crosses the hills of the Pogórze Przemyskie and is 39 km long within the landscape park. Those seeking a longer route that runs mostly through forest can consider the 74 km blue hiking trail: it passes mainly through forest areas and follows the San for a short section.
The Przemyśl Fortress can also be explored thematically via its own trail. The right-bank Fortress Trail is 28 km long in total and leads along rural and wooded paths to particularly interesting forts. The different lengths and descriptions help you choose a route based on your preferred focus; the distance figures alone do not indicate walking time.
Castles, churches and religious traditions
Krasiczyn Castle, dating from the 16th century, is considered one of Poland’s most valuable architectural monuments. It is surrounded by a 9-hectare park. The castle complex and its surrounding park therefore offer distinct aspects of a cultural stay. In Posada Rybotycka stands Poland’s oldest brick fortified church, dating from the 15th century. Fragments of a 17th-century polychrome decoration have been preserved inside.
Another religious center is the Sanctuary of the Passion of Christ and Our Lady in Kalwaria Pacławska. Religious celebrations are held there several times a year, attracting many residents as well as pilgrims and tourists from Poland and Ukraine. The Passion play is also performed every year in Kalwaria Pacławska in two parts: “Wieczernik” and “Na krzyż z Nim.” Those interested in sacred history and religious traditions may wish to give these themes particular consideration when choosing where to stay.
The Przemyśl Fortress is also part of the region’s historical story. It is one of Europe’s largest modern-era fortresses and a historical and tourist attraction for visitors to the Przemyśl region as well as the local population. Together with the Fortress Trail, it offers a distinct focus for travelers interested in military history.
Landscapes and distinctive natural areas
The Pogórze Przemyskie Landscape Park covers 61,862 hectares and extends across several municipalities in Przemyśl County. Within this vast landscape are protected areas, each with its own focus. Reberce Nature Reserve covers 190.96 hectares and protects remnants of primeval Carpathian forest near Wola Korzeniecka, Kraja and Łomna. Near Korzeniec in the municipality of Bircza, the 134.46-hectare Krępak Nature Reserve preserves the landscape values of the hill of the same name, with a well-preserved stand of old fir and beech forest.
Smaller protected areas highlight other features: Szachownica Nature Reserve covers 16.67 hectares and protects the very rare fritillary in Krówniki. The 2.60-hectare Brzoza Czarna Nature Reserve is located in Reczpol in the municipality of Krzywcza and was established to preserve a natural stand of black birch. In Siedliska in the municipality of Medyka, the Skarpa Jaksmanicka Fauna Reserve protects a large breeding colony of European bee-eaters on a loess slope near the road, across an area of 1.93 hectares. The Przełom Hołubli Forest Landscape Reserve covers 46.42 hectares in Korytniki in the municipality of Krasiczyn and Wapowce in the municipality of Przemyśl; it protects forest plant communities.
Arboretum and further discoveries
The Bolestraszyce Arboretum in the municipality of Żurawica lies 7 km north of Przemyśl and covers 12.8 hectares. Its grounds include a park, a pomological orchard, nurseries and a Neoclassical manor house with a natural history museum. Visitors can see around 1,800 species, varieties and forms of trees and shrubs, as well as 1,200 species of herbaceous plants. A geological feature of the county is the “Skałka z rybami” documentation site in Skopów in the municipality of Krzywcza.
