Brewing history and local history

The Ekspozycja Browarnicza at the Muzeum Ziemi Leżajskiej can be visited with a guide; the tour lasts about 40 minutes. This makes it easy to plan as a separate activity. If you are considering a taste of the drink described there as “golden”, check what is on offer before your trip.

The brewing history dates back to 1525, when King Zygmunt I Stary granted the town the right to brew beer. At the same time, he prohibited the sale of beer and other alcoholic beverages within less than a mile of the town limits. This historic regulation gives your museum visit a specific connection to local history without requiring you to plan a lengthy tour.

Museum collections and underground rooms

At the Museum of the Bernardine Province in Leżajsk, you can visit historic underground rooms with vaulted ceilings and uncovered fragments of 17th-century fortifications. The collection offers a different way to explore history: it includes paintings, sculptures, church furnishings, liturgical vestments and vessels, Sarmatian portraits, funeral objects and everyday items used by the friars. If you are interested in both architecture and objects, the rooms and the collection offer different impressions of the same museum visit.

Exploring Leżajsk on foot

A tourist walking route of more than three kilometres leads from the Market Square along Mickiewicza Street to Plac Mariacki, where the basilica and Bernardine monastery stand. It offers a route that combines a town visit with sacred architecture. At Plac Mariacki, you can end your walk with a view of the church and monastery complex.

For a view from above, the Centrum Informacji Turystycznej i Kulturalnej offers the opportunity to climb its tower and see Leżajsk from several levels. Another option is the landscaped grounds of the historic manor complex, which include a park featuring Leżajsk toys. These different destinations help you choose between a longer walk through town, a tower visit and some time outdoors.

Sacred places and traditions in Leżajsk

The wider destination of Leżajsk is home to the complex comprising the Basilica of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Bernardine monastery. The church was built in 1618–1628; in April 2005, the monastery complex was granted the status of a historic monument. The Leżajsk organ is considered one of Europe’s most valuable monuments of instrument-making and ornamental art.

Jewish heritage also shapes Leżajsk. Every year around the turn of February and March, thousands of Hasidim come to the Jewish cemetery to honour Elimelech of Leżajsk (1717–1787). The cemetery is considered Poland’s most important Hasidic pilgrimage site. The ohel contains a symbolic stone tomb for Elimelech; the matzevot of his son Eleazar and his grandson Naftali also lean against the wall.

If you want to explore Leżajsk on foot, there are several walking guides on different themes and with different durations, in addition to the town route. “W Leżajsku na piasku, objawiła się przy lasku, Matka Boska Marya…” leads from the monastery to the Market Square and takes about 50 minutes. “Los rzucony na stos” tells the story of Mielczarkowa, known in local folklore as the “Witch of Leżajsk”, and takes about 60 minutes. “Tajemnicze zabójstwo w biały dzień”, a story about Maria Jaroszówna, the granddaughter of Leżajsk notary Alfred Josse, also takes around 60 minutes. The different themes and durations make it easier to choose a shorter or longer walk.

A new walking and cycling route passes through the Las Klasztorny nature reserve, offering close contact with nature. So, alongside local history and culture, the wider destination of Leżajsk also offers routes with a connection to nature.
