Experience History and Nature in Wieprz on the Soła

Wieprz lies on the right bank of the Soła and combines a connection to the river with archaeological traces, local art and opportunities to stay active. If you want to choose a place in Poland based on more than just one type of excursion, its mix offers several starting points: nature and the river, history, and sport and play. The Soła, Nature and Planned Routes

In Wieprz, the Soła is both a river landscape and a subject of local exhibitions and recreation. The Centre for Ecological Education features exhibitions about protected plants and animals, as well as vegetation along the banks of the Soła. Topics include fish, angling and combating poaching. A nature and walking route presented in September 2024 was then still in development. It was planned to run from Radziechowy-Wieprz railway station through Wieprz to the summit of Grojec. The planned route was to pass through extensive fields and herb-rich meadows with wild vegetation. One of the highest-altitude peat bogs in the Beskids is also located near the route leading to Grojec. Before setting out, check whether the planned route has since been completed.

Archaeology, Church and Local Art

A Stone Age settlement is located in the Chyśkowiec field on the southwestern slope of the Grojec massif. The municipal heritage protection programme, adopted on 3 March 2022, assigns it significant archaeological, historical and cultural value; the settlement is protected by law. The area's history thus reaches far beyond its later buildings.

A listed chapel dating from 1886 stands on the main road. In the Church of the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Maria Antonina Kozłowska and Zofia Szczerba worked on sgraffito polychrome decorations in the church interior from 1963 to 1966. An exhibition of sculptures by folk artist and sculptor Anna Ficoń is also on display there. Check current access arrangements before visiting. Wiesław Pawlus is also active in Wieprz as a paper artist, embroiderer and storyteller—a further local point of reference for art and crafts.

Things to Do in Wieprz

The fenced and monitored active recreation facility brings together several sports and play options. It includes two volleyball courts and two boules courts, as well as a multi-purpose court that can be used for football, basketball and volleyball. There is also a playground and a tennis court. The same facility therefore offers something for a range of leisure interests, from a visit to the playground to ball sports.

The Góralska Stations of the Cross also has strong ties to the area: it was established in 2016 and runs from the church along Kościelna, Zagórczańska and Żywiecka streets, returning to the church. Parish history records it as an annual event; check the current dates before your trip.
