The 2.2 km Żabnica–Cięcina educational trail runs along a section of the black cycle route. Wooden church, fortifications and chapel
The wooden Church of Our Lady of Częstochowa in Żabnica was built between 1910 and 1914. Three features give its architecture a distinct form: it is built using log construction, has the ground plan of a Latin cross and stands on a stone plinth. Log construction describes how the wooden building is built; the Latin-cross ground plan describes the shape of the building when viewed from above. This makes it possible to consider the building’s age, construction material and basic form as different aspects—an interesting approach if, alongside hiking destinations, you are also interested in regional sacred architecture.
The “Wąwóz” combat bunker adds another historical focus. It is located in Żabnica and is one of the many fortifications from the Second World War in this area. For those interested in culture, this offers different subjects: timber construction and sacred architecture on the one hand, and the history of fortifications on the other. There is also a wooden chapel in Żabnica-Skałka on the black route toward Hala Boracza. Its patrons are Matka Boska Nieustającej Pomocy and św. Brat Albert. The church and chapel can also be distinguished by their precise locations: the church is in Żabnica, while the chapel is in Żabnica-Skałka on the route toward Hala Boracza.
Religious traditions
A Way of the Cross prayer on the parish roads began in 2005. The so-called “Góralska Pasterka” was held in Żabnica from 2006, at the initiative of local musicians. During the Christmas night gathering, around 40 musicians with various instruments assembled at the altar. The two historical examples differ in their setting: one is a prayer on the parish roads, the other a musical gathering at the altar on Christmas night. Together, they give an impression of two different forms of religious practice in Żabnica.
