Parks and culture in Siedlce
Aleksandria Park offers a glimpse into the history of the gardens while also providing space for relaxation and leisure. It was first laid out in the first half of the 18th century in the Italian style. During the time of Princess Aleksandra Ogińska, it was redesigned in the sentimental style based on a plan by Franciszek Salezy Sarnowski. Today, the park is also a venue for cultural and artistic events. Families with children of different ages can enjoy a playground divided into age groups, while an outdoor fitness trail rounds out the facilities.
Pałac Ogińskich also tells the story of the site’s changing architectural history: Kazimierz Czartoryski had it built before 1730, before Aleksandra Ogińska had it extensively remodeled in the classical style between 1779 and 1781. At the Muzeum Diecezjalne in Siedlce, El Greco’s painting “The Ecstasy of St. Francis” is the most valuable exhibit. Art lovers can make a visit to the museum a highlight of their stay.
Castles, trails and a river landscape
The Gothic Castle of Liw dates from the first half of the 15th century and lies in the valley of the Liwiec River. The Muzeum Zbrojownia na Zamku w Liwie, housed in the castle, displays military and weaponry items from around the world. Its collection ranges from finds from the Roman era to 20th-century weapons. The castle is on the Szlak Wielkiego Gościńca Litewskiego, the Szlak Książąt Mazowieckich, the Szlak Doliny Liwca and the Szlak Rowerowy Natura. The meandering Liwiec Valley is popular for canoeing and hiking. Alongside castles and collections, visitors can also choose activities in the river landscape. Stawy Siedleckie offers a different natural highlight: established in 2008, this 224-hectare faunal nature reserve comprises eleven ponds separated by dikes. It protects breeding habitats, feeding and resting grounds for rare bird species, and habitats for rare protected plant and invertebrate species.
Circular routes and further discoveries
The Sekuła nature and forestry trail is a 2.1-kilometre circular route with eight information boards about how forest ecosystems function. If you would like to learn about ecological connections while out and about, you can include this short route in your plans. The Zielone Siedlce cycling route links the areas around the reservoir with the Dolina Muchawki ecological landscape feature, the Sekuła forest and its nature education trail, and the Siedlce Błonia.
In Węgrów, the Szlak Mistrza Jana Twardowskiego is aimed primarily at families with children. Along the route, visitors can see the Minor Basilica with the legendary mirror of Master Twardowski. The Szlak Wielokulturowy in Węgrów is particularly recommended for history enthusiasts and those interested in architectural monuments and cultural heritage. For another cultural and historical highlight in the wider travel region, Dąbrowa is home to the permanent exhibition of the Muzeum Ziemiaństwa, on the ground floor of a late-classical manor house. The building was erected in 1850 for the Dobrzyński family and is surrounded by a historic park and orchard.
In Pruszyn near Siedlce, an organ by Joachim Wagner dating from 1745 was discovered in 2003 in the attic of a church. It was carefully restored and once again plays at open concerts of organ music.
