Local history and traditions

Prince Józef Poniatowski had his headquarters in Wiązowna in 1809. The town’s church history provides further dates: the Parish of Saint Adalbert, Bishop and Martyr, was established in 1589 by decree of Bishop of Poznań Łukasz Kościelecki. The first wooden church in Wiązowna was built in 1580 and was later destroyed. A new church in the Empire style was built from 1794 to 1797, with financial support from Princess Maria, née Lubomirski Radziwiłł. A historic church stands on the eastern edge of Wiązowna. These historical milestones offer two perspectives: the parish and church construction point to the town’s religious history, while Poniatowski’s headquarters provide another historical connection. More than two centuries separate the first wooden church in 1580 from Poniatowski’s stay in 1809, so these connections span more than a single era.

The name Wiązowna is also associated with a local tradition that leaves two possible explanations open. One traces it to the elm trees that once grew here in great numbers. The other refers to shackles or chains: criminals are said to have been held here and in neighboring villages. Both interpretations remain part of local tradition; they give the place name a cultural background without establishing a single definitive origin.

The half marathon and trails as reasons to visit

The Półmaraton Wiązowski is a recurring running event. According to local accounts, it has been held for four decades. Every year in late February or early March, thousands of people come for the half marathon, the 5 km race or to watch. These options distinguish between two race distances and attending as a spectator. If you want to plan your trip around the event, check the date of that year’s edition before booking.

Several hiking trails run through Wiązowna and are used year-round by cyclists and walkers. This offers different reasons to visit: a recurring event held at a specific time of year and trails described as being used throughout the year. When planning, you can first decide whether a specific race date should determine your stay or whether you would rather focus on hiking and cycling.
