Discover Józefów
Accommodation in Józefów
Józefów brings together natural attractions, distinctive architecture and trails that vary in length and route. To plan your visit, start by choosing what matters most to you: would you like to explore nature reserves, admire Świdermajer houses or choose one of the hiking trails described here? History is also part of the town’s character—from a trail along the former narrow-gauge railway to the subject of the Muzeum 2 Korpusu Polskiego.
Natural Areas in Józefów
Józefów is home to three nature reserves: Wyspy Świderskie, Wyspy Zawadowskie and Świder. Part of the Mazowiecki Landscape Park is also located in the town. These names refer to different protected areas and give your trip a clear focus on nature. If you choose Józefów as your destination, you can combine this focus with the town’s architectural and historical attractions.
Świdermajer and 1930s Architecture
More than 30 buildings in Józefów are listed in the register of the Voivodeship Conservator of Monuments. Most are residential houses dating from around the turn of the 20th century, built in the Świdermajer style. This style is therefore a distinctive part of the town’s architectural history. Two characteristic “winged shelters” add to this picture: their shell roofs, suspended signs and waiting areas designed in the style of 19th-century railway carriages are considered notable examples of modernist design from the 1930s.
Two Hiking Trails, Different Lengths
The 14.5 km MZ-5085y hiking trail, “Szlak nad brzegiem Wisły,” runs through Józefów along ul. Podstołeczna and the boundary of Wyspy Zawadowskie Nature Reserve. Its route also passes through Wyspy Świderskie and along ul. Górki and ul. Nadwiślańska.
At 9.5 km, hiking trail MZ-5081z is shorter. In Józefów, it runs along ul. Główna, ul. Dobra and ul. Sikorskiego, then crosses the railway at Michalin and continues along ul. Graniczna, ul. Słoneczna, ul. Szeroka, ul. 3 Maja, ul. Kopernika, ul. Wawerska, ul. Ogrodowa, ul. Dworska and ul. Kardynała Stefana Wyszyńskiego to the boundary of Wyspy Świderskie Nature Reserve. The two distances make it easy to compare the scale of the trails; you can consider their routes separately, by the streets and areas named here.
Cycling and History
Józefów has a publicly accessible traffic education facility for pedestrians and cyclists, designed to replicate road infrastructure. It includes paved roadways, a cycle path with a practice area, sidewalks, traffic lights and road signs. It offers a practical connection to the topic of traffic, whether you are mainly interested in the hiking trails or in architecture and history.
The former narrow-gauge railway trail runs from the eastern edge of the town, on the border with Wiązowna municipality, past the station to the monument to the Armia Krajowa female couriers. The former railway is the trail’s historical connection. The Muzeum 2 Korpusu Polskiego is dedicated to the legacy of General Władysław Anders’s soldiers and the history of Poland’s struggle for freedom and independence: from the national uprisings and the Second World War to the fate of the Polish Armed Forces in the West.
