In Lipski County, the Wisła (Vistula) river landscape, trails through fields and forests, and historical sites in several towns come together. Lipski County stretches across the Radom Hills, the Opatów Upland and the Kozienice Basin. The Wisła Valley separates it from the Lublin Upland by a steep escarpment. When choosing accommodation and planning your trip, you can therefore first decide whether nature, active days or the history of individual towns should be the focus.

River Landscapes and Nature

The Wisła Valley in Lipski County lies within the municipalities of Chotcza and Solec. There, the river has a wide bed with numerous islands and sandbanks. The landscape is also of interest for birdwatching: more than 320 bird species have been recorded throughout the Wisła Valley. Around Chotcza and Solec, about 40 species of water and wetland birds nest. These figures refer to different areas—the entire valley on the one hand, and the surroundings of the two municipalities on the other.

The protection of a variety of landscapes also shapes the region. The Wisła lowlands in Lipski County are designated as Natura 2000 sites of international importance for the conservation of biological diversity. The Solec nad Wisłą Landscape Protection Area was established by an ordinance of the Masovian Voivode on 19 April 2002. Near Sadkowice, close to Solec nad Wisłą, a nature reserve protects steppe vegetation. Thus, alongside the river landscape, habitats with a different character are also on the region’s list of places to discover.

Hiking Trails, Cycling and Fishing

A waymarked green hiking trail follows the Krępianka through fields and forests, connecting Lipsko with Solec nad Wisłą. The route is 11 km long. For longer hikes, there is also the red Rzeczniów–Sienno trail: it runs via Kochanówka, Wólka Modrzejowa, Grabowiec, Podkońce, Płósy and Rzechów, before returning to Rzeczniów, and is 39 km long.

Cycling routes also run throughout Lipski County. Their total length is 415.6 km, of which 208.8 km are within the administrative boundaries of Lipski County. There is also the “Turtle and Dinosaur Trail,” a route for both pedestrians and cyclists. The trails offer different ways to explore the region on foot or by bike, without having to combine them into a single route. Those who prefer to spend time by the water can fish in the Iłżanka, Krępianka, Wisła and Kamienna rivers, as well as in standing waters.

History and Culture in Several Towns

In Solec nad Wisłą, medieval castle ruins dating from the 13th and 14th centuries recall a border fortress commissioned by King Casimir the Great. Remains of walls and foundations, as well as traces of a cylindrical tower, have survived. Solec nad Wisłą is also home to a 17th-century Reformed Franciscan monastery complex. The Church of St. Barbara dates from the 16th century and is considered one of the oldest wooden monuments in Masovia.

Another historic destination is the Church of St. Zygmunt in Sienno. It dates from the 15th century and contains a foundation plaque built into the wall, dating from 1442. The county’s cultural heritage also includes a synagogue in the municipality of Ciepielów. The village museum in Lipa Miklas is also listed as a county attraction. If you are planning your trip around cultural interests, you can consider these places separately and focus on their respective historical connections.

Lipsko as a Point of Reference

Lipsko is the administrative centre of Lipski County and lies in the Krępianka Valley. Here, National Road 79 between Warsaw and Sandomierz crosses Voivodeship Road 747 between Iłża and Solec nad Wisłą. These roads help place Lipsko within the county. The region between Kazimierz Dolny, Janowiec and Bałtów is considered a starting point for hiking and cycling trips. In the town and municipality of Lipsko, the Lipskie Centrum Kultury organises concerts, festivals, competitions, exhibitions and author events, among other things.
