Żelechów combines distinctive church architecture with the history of the painter Józef Chełmoński. A 35-kilometre cycling route also passes through the town and continues through several other stops. This gives you two different options for planning your trip: sacred architecture and art history, or a longer cycling route. The historical connections to Chełmoński also link Żelechów with its surrounding area.

Church architecture and sacred art

In the centre of Żelechów stands the single-nave brick Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It was built in the mid-16th century in the Late Gothic style. “Single-nave” describes a church interior with one main nave; together with the brickwork and Late Gothic design, this gives the church a clear architectural classification. Inside, Renaissance and Baroque furnishings complement the building’s architectural history.

Some individual objects also have specific dates: the high altar dates from 1771, while the Renaissance tombstone of the knight Kacper Miński dates from around 1570 to 1580. The tombstone and the later altar point to different periods. The church can therefore be explored not only through its architectural style, but also through the different eras reflected in its furnishings. This offers several points of interest for those interested in culture: the layout of the building, the stylistic references inside, and the history of individual works of art and memorial objects.

Żelechów is also home to a stone roadside shrine with a figure of Saint John of Nepomuk from the 17th century. As a roadside shrine, it is a different form of sacred art from the furnishings inside the church. The two can therefore be considered separately: the architecture and objects within the church building, and a separate roadside shrine with its saint’s figure. This adds another historical point of interest in the town to the history of the church.

Józef Chełmoński and Żelechów

The painter Józef Chełmoński often visited Żelechów. He found landscape motifs for his paintings in the surrounding area. The church is also connected to his story: his funeral service was held there on 8 April 1914. His grave is in the parish cemetery in Żelechów; Chełmoński lived in nearby Kuklówka. These connections do not all lead back to the same place. His repeated visits and the funeral service are associated with Żelechów, the landscape motifs with its surroundings, and his home with nearby Kuklówka. Those interested in the connection between art and place can distinguish between these different geographical links.

Cycling a longer route

The 35-kilometre cycling route passes through Grodzisk Mazowiecki, Siestrzeń, Młochów and Żelechów before returning to Grodzisk Mazowiecki. The stated distance refers to the entire route, not to a section within Żelechów. This offers a different way to experience the town than exploring its church and art history: Żelechów is one stop on a route connecting several places. A municipal strategy notes that route signage and information are inconsistent. Before setting out, check the current route guidance and do not rely on uniformly consistent signage throughout.
