Łaszczówka-Kolonia: Cycling Tour and Military Cemetery
Accommodation in Łaszczówka-Kolonia
Łaszczówka-Kolonia brings together two clearly defined themes: the “W poszukiwaniu Don Kichota” cycling route passes through the village, and a military cemetery commemorates those who fell in the First World War. This gives travellers a clear distinction between a specifically named cycling tour and a historic memorial site. The town history of Tomaszów Lubelski is an additional focus in the wider Tomaszowski destination.
Cycling through Łaszczówka-Kolonia
The 71.4-kilometre “W poszukiwaniu Don Kichota” cycling tour passes through Łaszczówka-Kolonia. Its name identifies the specific tour, its distance indicates its length, and its connection to the village links it to Łaszczówka-Kolonia. Check local route conditions before setting out.
The military cemetery and its dates
The First World War military cemetery in Łaszczówka-Kolonia is known as “Bratnia mogiła”. According to the inscription, the mass grave holds 896 soldiers of the Austro-Hungarian and Russian armies who fell in the 1914 battles near Tomaszów Lubelski. A cross stands on the burial mound and probably dates from the cemetery’s founding period, that is, 1915. The dates mark different points of reference: 1914 for the battles and the soldiers’ deaths, and 1915 for the founding period from which the cross probably dates.
Town history in the wider Tomaszowski destination
The wider Tomaszowski destination also highlights the town history of Tomaszów Lubelski. The Renaissance Market Square forms the centre of the historic town layout, which has been preserved to this day, with the exception of the western part, which was destroyed during the last war. The Salt Market was established thanks to the salt-storage privilege granted to the town. At the southeastern corner of the market, a monument commemorates the adoption of the Constitution of 3 May; another monument in front of the town administration building commemorates the battles for Tomaszów Lubelski. The Renaissance Market Square and the Salt Market thus represent two different aspects of the town’s history: its historic layout and the salt-storage privilege.
The Baroque wooden church on Kościelna Street was built in 1627 and is described as Tomaszów Lubelski’s most valuable historic monument. Distinct traces of the former defensive walls and town moat survive behind the church. The Orthodox church next to the market dates from the late 19th century. The Janusz Peter Museum holds about 15,000 exhibits in the fields of archaeology, history, numismatics, ethnography and art.
Cycling routes in the wider Tomaszowski destination also include “Bezdroża Łaszczówki” and “Dookoła Tomaszowa”.
