Kazimierz Dolny: Townhouses, Gorges and the Vistula Riverbank

Architecture and history

On September 8, 1994, an order by the President of the Republic of Poland designated Kazimierz Dolny a Pomnik Historii (Historic Monument). The decision recognized the town’s architectural and landscape qualities.

The tall, distinctive stepped gables of the townhouses draw on Renaissance and Mannerist forms. They were also influenced by Italian and Dutch models, as well as local folk traditions. The parish church of St. John the Baptist and St. Bartholomew houses 17th-century organs considered the oldest fully preserved Polish instruments of their kind.

Of the sixty granaries that stood in Kazimierz Dolny in the mid-17th century, eleven have survived in varying states of preservation. A wooden well dating from 1905 also stands in the Market Square. Eleven out of sixty granaries is just under one fifth.

Gorges, riverbanks and routes

Wąwóz Korzeniowy Dół is a landform created by agricultural activity that resembles a sunken lane. Its exposed tree roots are a distinctive feature. Wąwóz Małachowskiego is named after Count Juliusz Małachowski, who was killed on April 18, 1831, during a battle with Russian troops near Kazimierz in the November Uprising. A stone plaque at the edge of the gorge commemorates him.

Two routes starting from Duży Rynek offer different highlights: the PTTK sightseeing tour passes through the streets of Kazimierz Dolny and along the Grodarz Valley to Wąwóz Korzeniowy Dół, where the walk takes about 20 minutes. A promenade runs along the Vistula riverbank in Kazimierz Dolny. Another route starts at Duży Rynek and follows this promenade and Aleja Kazimierza Wielkiego to the “Pod Żurawiem” granary. There is a small botanical garden at the natural history museum of Muzeum Nadwiślańskie. It is used for educational activities and offers visitors a place to relax during their visit to the town.
