Kraśnik (Polish: Kraśnik) offers plenty to explore on a trip focused on architecture, city history and historical themes. Sights range from a 15th-century church to museum exhibitions about the cityscape and the region’s history. A reconstructed brick kiln and a Way of St. James route passing through Kraśnik are also distinctive features of the area.

Churches and architectural history in Kraśnik

The three-aisled WNMP church dates from the 15th century and is part of a former monastery complex of Augustinian Canons. It covers an area of about 560 m². “Three-aisled” describes the division of the church interior into a nave and two aisles; the term makes the architectural form as clear as the date places it in its historical context.

Another important architectural monument in Kraśnik is a 17th-century hospital church. The two churches thus represent buildings from different centuries. Those interested in architecture can consider these sites as distinct historical points of reference in the city, without treating them as a single complex.

Three perspectives at the Regional Museum

The Regional Museum in Kraśnik presents three permanent exhibitions: “24th Uhlan Regiment: History and Tradition,” “The Battles of Kraśnik, 1914–1915,” and “Old Kraśnik.” The first focuses on the 24th Uhlan Regiment, which was stationed in Kraśnik from 1922 to 1939. The exhibition about the battles of 1914–1915 explores the First World War in the region. Its focus is the major Battle of Kraśnik in August 1914, fought between Austro-Hungarian and Russian armies.

“Old Kraśnik” features photographs documenting the city’s history. They include buildings that no longer survive, as well as those that still exist today in altered form. Together, the three exhibitions offer different perspectives: a regiment stationed in the city, wartime events in the region and the changing urban landscape. Check which exhibitions are currently on display before your visit. Tickets can be reserved at the museum ticket office; it is best to confirm reservation details in advance.

For organized groups, a museum notice from 2023 lists guided historical city tours by prior arrangement. The published offer is aimed at groups; check whether it is currently available before making plans.

Historic sites and traces of craftsmanship

Sights on Kraśnik’s Hasidic Trail include the so-called New Cemetery and the building of the former mikveh. The cemetery was established in the mid-19th century. The former mikveh building adds a different type of site to this historical focus.

A reconstructed kiln for firing hand-moulded bricks is located by the recreational reservoir in Kraśnik. It is the only reconstructed kiln of its kind in the Lubelszczyzna region. This adds a connection to traditional brickmaking to the churches, exhibitions and places of remembrance. The kiln’s location by the reservoir is its specific point of reference.

Kraśnik along a longer route

The 135 km Lubelska Droga św. Jakuba (Lublin Way of St. James) connects Lublin with Sandomierz. It runs from Lublin via Kraśnik and Annopol to Zawichost, then continues to Sandomierz. This places Kraśnik along a longer route; the route offers a different spatial perspective from the museum themes focused on the city and its history. Check current trail conditions before planning a trip.

For travel planning, Kraśnik therefore offers several clearly distinct highlights: church architecture, city and regional history at the museum, historic sites along the Hasidic Trail, and a route that extends beyond the region. You can decide which ones will shape your stay based on how you want to balance city history and route planning.
