Church and town hall: different layers of history

The All Saints’ Church in Zakliczyn is a timber-framed structure made of larch and pine. Its construction makes the timber framework an essential part of its architecture. A Gothic crucifix dating from 1430–1440 is located on the south wall; the main altar dates from the 18th century and is in the Rococo style. This allows different historical layers to be distinguished within a single building: the crucifix belongs to the Gothic period, while the altar is from a later era. The structure and furnishings offer different perspectives on sacred architecture.

Another church tradition is shaped by the Conventual Franciscans. They founded a monastery in Zakliczyn in 1622, and the order remains active there today. The monastery includes the parish church of Matki Bożej Anielskiej, or Our Lady of the Angels in English. The 17th-century foundation and the order’s continued activity connect the local history of the monastery with the present day.

The town hall represents another period in the town’s history. It dates from the 19th century and replaced an earlier wooden building. It is Neoclassical in form, with a Neo-Gothic portico. The combination distinguishes the building’s overall form from the design of its portico. Together with the All Saints’ Church, the town hall illustrates two different types of building: sacred timber architecture and a municipal building from the 19th century.

Memorial sites and route connections

The memory of the First World War is associated with two war cemeteries. Cemetery No. 294 is located in the parish cemetery in Zakliczyn. Cemetery No. 293 is by the road to Kończyska and is a cemetery for soldiers of Jewish nationality. The numbers and precise locations help distinguish the two memorial sites; the explicitly named history of Jewish soldiers is also part of the context of Cemetery No. 293.

Zakliczyn is also connected to two distinct routes. The historic Camino de Santiago passed through the town; according to the town description, its history dates back to the 9th century. This should be distinguished from the Szlak Średniowiecznych Miasteczek Małopolski, or Trail of the Medieval Towns of Lesser Poland. Zakliczyn is one of the twelve towns and settlements on this route, which is classified as a driving route. Here, the Camino de Santiago refers to a historic passage through the town, while the Trail of the Medieval Towns places Zakliczyn within a regional route network.
