Zawada combines trails through the landscape with small historical traces in the village and its surroundings. The village lies in the southern part of the Wyżyna Olkuska, the Olkusz Upland, and in the Dolinki Krakowskie Landscape Park. This gives you a clear point of reference when choosing a holiday destination: in Zawada, routes and scenery are as much in focus as individual reminders of the village’s history.
Trails through Zawada
The green hiking trail through the Racławka Valley passes through Zawada on the section from Racławice to Zimnodół. The village is therefore on a stretch between those two places. If you are planning your trip around hiking, you can use this route as a specific point of reference when choosing your destination.
The red Eagles’ Nests cycling trail also passes through Zawada. Hiking and cycling thus offer two different ways to explore the village: the green trail is associated with the Racławka Valley, while the cycling trail runs through Zawada as a separate route. If you are considering different activities for your holiday, you can treat these trails as separate options without assuming that they share a route or particular stages.
Another route connection is the Transjurajski Szlak Konny PTTK. It leads from Zawada via Zederman and Przeginia towards the ruins of the 14th-century Rabsztyn Castle. For planning purposes, the main points of interest are the sequence of places mentioned and the destination in the direction of the castle ruins. This also places Zawada in the context of a riding trail that extends beyond the village.
Landscape and surroundings
The surrounding landscape includes several distinctive features. Mining remains, including a sinkhole that formed before the First World War, lie between Gorenice and Zawada. A group of five trees designated as natural monuments is also located near Zawada, about 200 metres from the junction towards Gorenice. The group includes lime trees, a beech and a horse chestnut.
A hill with a limestone rock outcrop rises between Zawada and the Kolonia Podlesie settlement to the east. From there, you can enjoy a wide view of the Ojców Upland. This viewpoint adds a distinctive landscape perspective to the routes and natural monuments.
Local history and cultural traces
Zawada is home to the imposing Chapel of Matki Boskiej Różańcowej. Another visible historical feature is an old wooden house at number 40. A memorial plaque also forms part of the village’s history: the residents of Zawada dedicated it to Polish non-commissioned officer Winkler, who fell during a skirmish in the September Campaign of 1939.
According to local legend, the Karczmiskiem part of the village was once home to an inn. Travellers on the historic route from Silesia to Kraków via Sławków and Olkusz stopped there for a meal or a rest.
