Miechów – City History, Nature and Activity
Accommodation in Miechów
Miechów combines distinctive architectural history with a city park and a designated nature reserve. Its location on national road E-7 and its distance of 40 kilometres from Kraków also offer practical guidance for planning a trip. Its history, green spaces and location make it possible to assess the town as a potential destination for a stay in Poland.
Architectural history from manor house to monastery complex
Dworek Zacisze is a rare example of an urban manor house. It was built on 16 August 1784. Its precise date and distinctive architectural form set it apart from Miechów’s ecclesiastical buildings: the focus here is not a monastic complex but a single manor house.
The monastery and church complex of the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre dates back to 1163. It was founded by Jaksa of the Gryfit family. The parish church that stands today reflects several phases of construction: it is a three-aisled, three-bay Gothic basilica and preserves Romanesque fragments from the 13th century. In the second half of the 18th century, it was extensively remodelled in the late Baroque style after the Great Fire of Miechów in 1745. Architecture enthusiasts can see both medieval forms and later alterations in this one building.
The complex also includes the Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre, a copy of the original chapel in Jerusalem. The Museum of the Miechów Region offers another historical connection: it is housed in the former residence of the order’s generals. Together, these places tell different chapters of local history—from the founding of the monastic complex and its architectural development to the later use of the former residence.
City park and nature reserve
The seven-hectare city park in Miechów brings together several kinds of activity and recreation in one place. Its facilities include tennis courts, a training field, a route for cyclists and roller skaters, and an outdoor gym. There are also two playgrounds adapted for different age groups.
The Złota Góra Nature Reserve, in the Las Jaksicki forest complex, has a different natural character. It was designated in 1955 because of the steppe vegetation and subcontinental oak-hornbeam forest found there, and is considered a natural attraction.
