Lipno combines distinctive architectural history with places of remembrance and green spaces. If, while travelling through Poland, you are looking for more than landscapes and want to discover the stories of a city, you will find several points of interest here: from the medieval layout to churches and the town hall, as well as places associated with Pola Negri. This lets you tailor your stay to your own interests without reducing different eras to a single attraction.

Cityscape and Architectural History

In the centre of Lipno, an urban layout dating from the 14th, 18th and 19th centuries has been preserved. These periods give the city’s history a spatial framework. Lipno’s oldest architectural monument is a Gothic church, completed in 1388 and built in the second half of the 14th century. The town hall adds a distinctly later note: it stands in the central market square, now Plac Dekerta, and was built in 1836 in the Late Classicist style. Together, the two buildings show how different eras are present in Lipno’s urban history.

Other religious buildings also invite a closer look at their architectural style and furnishings. The Parish Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary has a Mannerist high altar with a painting by Wojciech Gerson. The Evangelical-Augsburg church is a brick Neo-Gothic building dating from 1865 to 1868. The cemetery also contains a Neo-Gothic chapel from 1837, built on the site of the former St Barbara’s Church, which was demolished in 1819. If you are interested in architecture, you can consider these places as distinct examples of Lipno’s architectural and religious history.

Pola Negri and Places of Cultural Remembrance

Lipno is Pola Negri’s birthplace: she was born here on 3 January 1897. Her birth name is given as Apolonia Chalupec, or, in Poland, as Apolonia Chałupiec. Another tribute to her can be found on the wall of the “Nawojka” cinema: a black-and-white frieze depicts Pola Negri alongside Charlie Chaplin. The cinema is part of the Miejskie Centrum Kulturalne and is located at ul. Mickiewicza 33.

The Izba Muzealna is also housed in the Miejskie Centrum Kulturalne building. Most of Lipno’s museum exhibits are held there, including Poland’s largest collection of memorabilia relating to Pola Negri. These offer different perspectives on the city’s history: her birthplace, her commemoration in public spaces and the items preserved in the museum. If these topics are part of your travel plans, check the visiting arrangements for each place in advance.

Parks and Outdoor Spaces

Miejski im. Gabriela Narutowicza Park is home to the “Dąb Wolności” (Oak of Freedom) and a garden pavilion dating from 1924. A project also created pocket parks with recreation areas, educational and recreational features, and plantings at six locations. These include ul. Bulwarna, ul. Ekologiczna, ul. Wiśniowa, ul. Bukowa and ul. Dolna, as well as the municipal pond. These different places make green spaces and recreation another theme to consider as you explore Lipno.

The Mień River runs through Lipno along its middle course. This means that, alongside the built-up centre, the cityscape also has a tangible connection to the surrounding landscape. The town hall, park, river and cultural sites mentioned above each offer a different focus; which ones interest you most can shape your exploration.

Culture and Events

The Miejskie Centrum Kulturalne is the main or co-organiser of recurring events, including the “LIPA” rock festival. The “Jastrząb” Sports Club holds international motorcycle events at the motocross track. These offerings appeal to different cultural and sporting interests. Event details may vary, so it is advisable to check dates before your trip.

More destinations: Skępe, Wielgie, Głęboczek, Polichnowo, Kikół, Będzeń, Moczadła, Glewo.
