Church of St Peter and St Paul: History and Art

The Church of St Peter and St Paul is Zagórów’s prominent cultural and historical landmark. The building stands behind a gate dating from 1800. Between 1740 and 1760, it was rebuilt in the late Baroque style through the patronage of Antoni Mikołaj Łukomski, Abbot of Ląd. This clearly defined period of construction gives the place a specific architectural theme.

The interior has a single nave and a rectangular chancel. Two chapels occupy the arms of the transept; they are dedicated to the Virgin Mary and the Holy Cross. This layout leads from the main nave to the chancel and chapels. The church can therefore be understood not only through the style of its reconstruction but also through its layout.

The furnishings include late Baroque side altars, a Rococo baptismal font and a pulpit decorated with the Pobóg and Ślepowron coats of arms. The high altar contains an image of the Virgin and Child from the mid-17th century, set in a Rococo frame. Sculptures of Saints Peter and Paul, dating from the 16th century, stand on either side of the high altar. The style, subject and dates offer different ways of experiencing the interior.

The vault is also part of the church’s artistic character: it is decorated with polychrome paintings by Aleksander Przewalski. Przewalski was a painter and sculptor, as well as a student of Jan Matejko. For those interested in culture, the church brings together architecture and visual art, although the two do not belong to the same period: the rebuilding took place in the 18th century, while the altarpiece and sculptures date from the mid-17th and 16th centuries, respectively.

Market on Duży Rynek

A market is held on Duży Rynek every Wednesday and Saturday. If you would like to include it in your trip, plan to visit on one of those two days and check the date locally before departure. Unlike the church’s architectural history, visiting the market requires planning around specific, recurring market days. This lets you decide whether the market schedule fits the days you intend to visit Zagórów.

Location and regional orientation

The administrative setting helps place Zagórów geographically: the town lies in Słupca County, in the Greater Poland Voivodeship, near the Warta River. The scenic stretch of road between Zagórów and Ląd adds another point of reference. This puts two different scales side by side: the location of the town and the character of a specifically named route. If your trip to Poland includes both places, you can include this stretch of road in your route as a distinct scenic highlight.

The church and market offer different ways to explore Zagórów: one focuses on architectural and artistic history, the other on the weekly rhythm of Duży Rynek. Along with the town’s location near the Warta River and the road towards Ląd, they give you a concrete picture of the place and help you fit Zagórów into your trip to Poland according to your interests.
