Ludwików: Glassworks History and Oaks on the Litwin

How can Ludwików be understood as a travel destination? The place can be explored through several specific traces: a former glassworks, houses for workers and historic buildings, as well as notable pedunculate oaks in the wider area. This brings local history and landscape together without any single site having to represent the whole place. When planning your trip to Poland, you can use these themes as a guide and decide whether you are more interested in the history of the place, its architectural styles, or the surroundings of the Litwin stream.

Glassworks and Local History

A glassworks founded by Ludwik Mittelstädt operated in Ludwików from 1826 to 1870. The place name is also said to derive from him. The connection between the founder and the place name gives the history a personal dimension; the years 1826 to 1870 also define the period during which the glassworks operated.

Workers’ Houses and the Estate

North of Ludwików, on the left-hand side of the road to Dębnica, stand single-storey residential buildings dating from the early 20th century. They were houses for workers on the estates of Przygodzice and are known as sześciorak and ośmiorak. Several specific features come together here: their location in relation to the road, their single-storey design, their former residential function, and their Polish names. The focus is therefore not only on the architecture, but also on the stated function of the houses as accommodation for workers.

In the wider area, northeast of Ludwików and beyond the Kocięba Ponds and the Litwin stream, lies the former Kociemba estate. Its buildings date from the second half of the 19th century and are made of brick and bog iron ore. The complex includes the estate manager’s house, now a residential building, a former workers’ house, and a former stable building, part of which is used as a residence. In contrast to the houses north of Ludwików, the focus here is on a former estate with several types of buildings. At the same time, former functions and present-day residential uses exist side by side.

Pedunculate Oaks and Cycling

Pedunculate oaks are also part of the wider surroundings of Ludwików. The monumental trees grow mainly along the Litwin stream. The stream is thus a shared geographical reference in descriptions of the landscape and the area: the oaks are located along it, while the former Kociemba estate lies beyond the stream and the Kocięba Ponds. The trees and the historic buildings are therefore distinct themes that sit alongside one another.

A stop for cyclists has been set up in the centre of Ludwików, next to the village community centre. This adds an explicitly cycling-related feature of the town centre to the historical and landscape themes.
