City Gate and Medieval Market Square

Brama Warszawska is the only one of Opatów’s four historic city gates that has survived. The gates were part of the city’s defensive system. The surviving gate was built of stone on a square plan between 1520 and 1530. It offers a tangible starting point for exploring Opatów’s urban history and its former fortifications.

The medieval layout of the market square in the Old Town has also been preserved. Together with the single surviving city gate, it creates a townscape in which history is visible in more than just one building: the market square conveys the inherited layout of the Old Town, while Brama Warszawska recalls its former defenses. Church Architecture from Several Eras

The Collegiate Church of St. Martin is a Romanesque building that was later altered and embellished with Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque features. These different styles are not separate attractions, but reflect the architectural history of a single church building. One especially tangible detail is the Lament Opatowski: the bas-relief depicts 40 figures mourning the death of Chancellor Krzysztof Szydłowiecki. It is one of two reliefs on the chancellor’s tomb, which is located on the left side of the collegiate church’s transept.

Another historical connection leads to the Bernardine Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and its monastery. The complex’s first wooden church was built in 1040 on the site of the settlement of Żmigród at the time. The present-day church is a single-nave Late Baroque building made of stone and, in part, brick. A restored wall surrounds the church and monastery. It is partly reinforced with buttresses and fitted with loopholes. The details about the early wooden church and the present-day building refer to different phases of construction.

An Insight into Surveying and Cartography

The Museum of Geodesy and Cartography in Opatów focuses on surveying and maps. Its collection comprises nearly 1,000 exhibits, including a large collection of cadastral maps and instruments from the pre-digital era. The exhibits are presented in multimedia-equipped rooms, alongside a sworn surveyor’s office furnished in retro style. Historical tools and their presentation in different formats are thus brought together. If you are interested in maps, surveying or the development of related instruments, the museum offers a distinct thematic experience alongside the churches and the town’s history.

Cycling Routes, Excursions and Local Sweets

For active trip planning, there are two different cycling route details: the Sandomierz–Opatów cycling route is 34.1 kilometers long and ends in Opatów. A yellow-marked cycling route runs through the Opatówka Valley and follows roads with little traffic. BORT – PTTK Oddział Opatów organizes excursions to monuments in Opatów and the surrounding area.
