Discover Mielec: Market Square, Basilica and Nature

Mielec can be explored through distinctly different themes: the Market Square tells the story of the city’s early development, St. Matthew’s Basilica and the “Jadernówka” Museum of Photography add a cultural perspective, while Leśny “Góra Cyranowska” Park brings together landscape and activity. The city’s history is tangible at the Market Square and basilica through two distinctly different periods of construction; the park foregrounds a glacial landscape and opportunities for activity.

Market Square and Early City History

On November 18, 1470, Jan and Bernardyn Mielecki founded the city; the Market Square was established as the center of its first development. Renovated in 2011, the square is surrounded by historic townhouses, paths and green spaces. Visitors can spend time among these features; in the evening, the fountain puts on a colorful display of water. The founding and renovation mark two distinctly different phases in the history of the same urban space.

Basilica, Photography and the COP Route

St. Matthew’s Basilica marks a later period. Built between 1670 and 1721 in the Baroque style, it is the oldest surviving religious building in Mielec. It is located on Tadeusza Kościuszki Street, near the Old Town Market Square. Its construction took place considerably later than the city’s founding in 1470; together, these two historic reference points illustrate different phases of the city’s development.

The “Jadernówka” Museum of Photography adds a cultural perspective with photographic exhibits spanning the period from the second half of the 19th century to the end of the 20th century. The COP Route in Mielec offers another perspective: it runs along Aleja Niepodległości and through the “Kolonia PZL” residential district. Its stops include the department heads’ house, the deputy directors’ official semi-detached house and the general director’s official villa.

Forest, Sand Dune and Activity in the Park

At Leśny “Góra Cyranowska” Park, the focus shifts from the built-up urban environment to a wooded landscape. The park lies on a sand dune formed during the Pleistocene; its highest point is 185 meters above sea level. Its geology and elevation give the park a distinct landscape profile in addition to its wooded character. A cycle path runs through the entire area, offering another way to experience the park.

Other features are located in different parts of the park. A 116-meter-long toboggan run on the northern slope is considered a winter attraction for the youngest residents; its use depends on winter conditions. In the western section, there are two slides and a large play area with a soft polyurethane surface. At the southern entrance is a gabion maze for children, with lighting and benches. Alongside its landscape, the park’s play and activity facilities can therefore be considered a distinct focus.
