Głogów: Town Hall, Castle and Theatre
Głogów Town Hall dates back to the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries. Its present-day appearance took shape through renovations carried out from 1832 to 1835 and from 1847 to 1850. Vaulted rooms from the transition between Gothic and Renaissance styles survive in the west wing. The town hall tower is 80.35 metres high and was reconstructed from 1994 to 1996 based on a design from 1720. An observation point is located at a height of 47 metres.
The tower of Zamek Książęcy is a separate landmark: the castle was rebuilt from 1971 to 1983 and houses the Muzeum Archeologiczno-Historyczne; its tower serves as an observation point. At the museum, you can enter the castle tower. There, the exhibition “Architectural Details from the Old Town” displays sculptures and other stone objects from Głogów’s former buildings. The town hall and castle thus offer two distinct ways to explore the city’s architectural history.
The rebuilt Teatr im. Andreasa Gryphiusa also contributes to Głogów’s cultural character. Reconstructed from 2017 to 2019, it serves as the home of a branch of the Municipal Cultural Centre and as a venue for concerts, performances and conferences. For a literary connection, look to Grochowice: Edward Stachura lived and worked there in the winter of 1967; the lives of the villagers were depicted in his work “Siekierezada.”
The Głogów Marina began operating on 30 April 2016. The excursion boat “Laguna” subsequently returned to the Oder, and the harbour was expanded to include kayaks and pedal boats.
The Oder Valley, Birdlife and River Landscape
In Głogów County, the Oder Valley preserves visible river bends, oxbow lakes and sandbanks. Migratory birds use a route through the valley, which is also home to numerous waterbird habitats. This landscape offers a different focus from Głogów’s historic centre: here, attention turns from individual buildings to the forms of the river and the habitats along its banks.
You can fish and relax around Borkowo, Golkowice and Mileszyn. A separate protected stretch of riverbank lies between Borek and Leszkowice; it has been protected since 1986. Those interested in river landscapes will find specific points of interest here in the Oder Valley, while the city’s history is most tangible in Głogów’s buildings and collections.
Trails and Other Places in Głogów County
A cycle path runs along the left bank of the Oder through Pęcław municipality, from Chobienia to Głogów. A nature trail also runs through the municipality, following the Białołęka–Droglowice–Leszkowice route. The “Jerzmanowa–Głogów–Jerzmanowa” cycle route is 32 kilometres long.
In Jerzmanowa, the palace park is ideal for long walks. It includes five hectares of trees, with avenues, evergreen ivy and ponds stocked with fish by local residents. Jerzmanowa municipality also recommends fishing in the commercially operated ponds in Bądzów, which are home to various fish species.
Individual places in the county offer further points of cultural and historical interest. In Czerna, in Żukowice municipality, there is a palace in the Gothic-Renaissance style. A castle complex is well preserved in Brzeg Głogowski. The park probably dates from the mid-19th century, although a park already existed on this site in the 18th century. These architectural and park histories complement the urban heritage of Głogów with distinctive local stories.
