Ciężkowice: Rocks and nature experiences

Ciężkowice combines a striking rocky landscape with nature education at several specific locations. The Skamieniałe Miasto Nature Reserve lies about 700 meters south of the center, on the northwestern slopes of the 365-meter-high Skała Hill. It is also traversed by a blue-marked hiking trail, and the area features a gorge with sandstone walls and activities related to nature and the environment. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus mainly on the rocks, a route, or the educational activities.

Rocky landscape and gorge

In Skamieniałe Miasto, the rocks lie on the slopes of Skała. The blue hiking trail runs through the reserve. One specific distance refers to the route from the parking lot to the last rock, Skałki z Krzyżem: it is about 1.5 kilometers long.

The Wąwóz Czarownic natural monument lies near the reserve. The gorge is about 70 meters long and between 15 and 25 meters deep; its sandstone walls rise several meters high. At one end, the Ostruszanka stream cascades down a drop of about ten meters. In winter and early spring, the cascade or water droplets can freeze.

Nature education for a range of interests

The Małopolskie Centrum Edukacji Ekologicznej in Ciężkowice complements the rocky landscape with nature education. It features the interactive Earth–Water–Air exhibition. The center also includes a Bat Cave, where visitors can learn about the lesser horseshoe bat, a rare species also found in the region.

The bat educational trail connects the center with the educational treetop walkway and includes ten learning stations. The treetop walkway itself is 1,020 meters long. Both are of interest to travelers who want to explore nature not only in the landscape but also through exhibitions and learning stations.

The Muzeum Przyrodnicze imienia Krystyny i Włodzimierza Tomków offers a different way to explore a nature-related topic. Organized school groups can attend an approximately 20-minute multimedia presentation about the Biała River in a bathyscaphe. The group takes part together with a guide. This is a clearly defined activity for school groups, distinct from the interactive exhibition at the educational center and the stations along the educational trail.

The published distances refer to different routes: about 1.5 kilometers from the parking lot to Skałki z Krzyżem in the reserve, and 1,020 meters for the treetop walkway.
