Five universities in Poznan will be united into one?
(Culture in Poland)
In Poznan is being discussed the project on merging of the five city universities into a powerful educational center. It is assumed that it would be able to raise the status of the city as an educational center, and will give an opportunity for the new integrated university to improve its ranking in the world rating of educational institutions.
At present the possibility of merging into one university is being considered by the University of Adam Mickiewicz, University of Economics, University of Medical Sciences, University of Natural Sciences, University of Physical Education and Poznan Technological University. According to poland.pl, these universities can form the basis of the new Poznan super university.
According to the publication gazeta.pl, attempt to unite the universities was made in the 1990-es. However, then at the university referendum teachers opposed such an initiative.
Anyway, now the question of uniting the five universities into one is under consideration. Each of the universities, more precisely its academic staff must determine the reasonability of this step.
Currently no one university of Poznan is among the top 500 universities of the world. In Poland today there are only two universities, which are marked in the rating - Warsaw University and Jagiellonian University in Krakow.
It should be noted that Poznan is traditionally one of the largest educational centers in Poland. Since October 28 here were held celebrations on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of the academic tradition in the city. Four centuries ago in Poznan was opened first educational institution - Jesuit College. The event was attended by the President of Poland Bronislaw Komorowski. Then was first announced the idea of creating a super university in Poznan.
