Square in Dąbrowa Górnicza will be named in the honor of Jimmy Hendrix
(Culture in Poland)
The unusual project, including renaming one of the main squares and installation of the monument to the famous rocker Jimmy Hendrix, residents of Zakopane suggested to the authorities.
Residents of one of the largest industrial cities of Upper Silezia, Dąbrowa Górnicza, situated in the south of Poland, near the popular tourist ski resort of Zakopane, offered the authorities an original idea. The uncommon idea of Dabrowa Gornicza residents is to rename the town square and to dedicate it to the famous rock musician of America - Jimmy Hendrix.
After the fall of the Soviet communist regime in Poland, about twenty years ago, many monuments of the socialist era were destroyed. However, some of the monuments has been preserved and transformed, introducing new idols. One of such preserved monuments was redesigned, repainted and dedicated to one of the most famous American musicians of the 70-s, singer and composer, the most daring and inventive virtuoso in the history of rock music, the greatest guitarist of all times - Jimmy Hendrix.
Recently, residents of Dąbrowa Górnicza suggested to change the communist alteration to the original sculpture of the great musician and name of the city's main squares in his honor.
Nevertheless, it should be noted that the idea of immortalizing the name of a famous rock musician on the streets of Poland, even if the residents’ of Dabrowa Gornicza proposal will be approved by the city council, will not be original. There are currently a number of Polish cities that have already implemented similar projects. Thus, there is a street in Warsaw named after John Lennon, and Krakow can boast of not only Elvis Presley Avenue, but the statue of the famous "King of Rock and Roll."
